The Elegant Universe is a documentary that talks about a possible multiverse of parallel universes formed (as a cluster of grapes I guess connected by black holes or worm) that would (as they say in the documentary as physicists say) 11 dimensions and not 4 as we know. How big are they? And how know they can be 11?

In current physics is a big problem, there are two general theories of relativity that describes very well how large objects behave (macroscopic) and how gravity works, and there is another theory, quantum physics, which describes very well how to behave microscopic particles (quarks, atoms, photons ..) as well as involve the other forces (electromagnetic, strong nuclear, weak nuclear).
But when trying to unite these two theories can not, no way of bringing them together, are to speak in some way like water and oil .. each one describes a part of the universe but is incapable of describing the other.
Here is where the string theory which aims to bring together these two theories in a more basic theory describing the universe. After many years of string theory research is moving a lot and are arriving at the conclusions that our universe would have 11 dimensions instead of 4 (+1 3espaciales temporary).
Why do not perceive these dimensions "extra"? Currently thought to be for two reasons: One is that
are funkiest on themselves and are so incredibly small that we are unable to perceive, only subatomic particles like quarks could move them. Imagine a straw (a cylinder) very fine, if you see her from far away would you say is so thin it only has two dimensions (which is flat), but if you were a microbe and you lived in the straw would you say you have 3.
The other possibility is that we held within a membrane 3dimensional which is in turn within a multidimensional universe. Imagine the earth, its surface, imagine that is a perfect sphere and you have 2 dimensions only and that you are trapped in these two dimensions .. you can walk for up front and sides but not up or down, you can not see or feel anything beyond these two dimensions, are you stuck in a brane 2dimensional which would be within a three-dimensional universe. To you it would seem your brana2dimensional is infinite .. You can walk forever and never ends, but is well defined within the universe of higher dimensions as it applies to the soil.
Within this multidimensional universe branes would have more than our own which could contain universes like ours and very different. It is thought that the bigbang also could have occurred by the collision of two branes which unleashed the ancient cataclysm and the formation of our universobrana.
All this is theory, not been able to prove anything and is difficult it can be shown because it is very difficult if not impossible to prove these ideas .. What kind of experiment could prove that?. All these ideas
arise from the equations and mathematically this is a very consistent theory that is able to unite relativity and quantum physics, but do need a model universe which at first glance it seems a bit strange.
